The company was founded in 1964 on West 56th Street in New York City by 25-year-old Hiroaki "Rocky" Aoki. Aoki, a wrestler who had qualified for but did not attend the 1960 Summer Olympics, started the restaurant with $10,000 earned from driving an ice cream truck in Harlem. The first restaurant, Benihana of Tokyo, was named for the red Safflower that was the name for the coffee shop owned by his parents in Tokyo. Aoki's concept was for the meals to be theatrically prepared by a knife-wielding, joke-telling chef at a teppanyaki table surrounded by a wooden eating surface in front of the guests (Teppan meaning "steel grill" or "griddle" and yaki meaning "grilled" or "broiled"). Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament is a family dinner theater featuring staged medieval-style games, sword-fighting, and jousting performed by a cast of 75 actors and more than 20 horses in each location. Each location is housed in a replica 11th-century castle. Before the show itself begins, a disclaimer recording is played, warning guests that the show uses strobe effects and that smoking is not allowed in the castle. The show begins with the narration of the horse, followed by a single Andalusian stallion running in the arena ("Horse at Liberty"), guided by the master of horse. Afterwards, a light show occurs that sets the theme and also divides the two sides, the West side (Yellow, Black and White, Red) and the East side (Blue, Red and Yellow, Green). Malibu Wines is open 7 days a week, and visitors 21 and over are welcome to taste wine with us from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. for tastings (last tasting begins at 6:30 p.m.). There is no cost for admission, just a minimum of one bottle purchase for each group of 2-4 people. Absolutely no outside alcohol is allowed on the premises, however, feel free to bring a picnic or non-alcoholic drinks for your enjoyment. We do not serve food. Weather: Although we see plenty of sunshine in Southern California, please keep in mind our tasting room is completely outdoors.
